Artist With A View, V Magazine |
Larry Horowitz, who works predominantly with a palette knife, creates alluring vistas, which are thickly painted and heavy on atmosphere. The oil paint, which is applied in a network of smudges, pats and scrapes, runs the gamut from light touches and dabs, to gloppy smears... In both works, Mr. Horowitz influences the mood of the viewer by anchoring his narrative in the periphery, adding believability to each scene.
-D. Dominick Lombardi, "Visual Depths Convey the Mood of a Place," New York Times
Because (I would wager) he is the slave of beauty. In the show's large catalog, Mr. Horowitz writes about a sketching tour he took through Cape Berton Island and describes a condition of raptured entrancement as he paints. No doubt that's good PR, but I believe him. The rapture is visible in the brushstrokes of the finished work, as well as in the fauver-than-fauve colors.
-Thomas M. Disch, "Gallery-Going," New York Sun
Larry Horowitz Breathe deeply! A landscape painter who uses the brush to make poetry. In his use of color and observations of nature, he reminds me of the glorious, magnificent world in which we live. His book lives on my desk.
